Ethiopian athleEthiopia suspends three athletes, investigates two foreigners for doping allegations tics officials said three athletes have been handed a professional suspension pending an investigation into doping allegations, while another three are being probed for the offense. The officials further revealed that two foreigners were suspected of providing banned substances to Ethiopian athletes, and one of them is being question in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

“We have 6 athletes that are being investigated for doping offenses. The World Anti- Doping Agency and the International Association of Athletics Federations are also running their own tests,” Alebachew Nigusse, President of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation told more than 300 athletes on Friday. The Federation’s Secretary General, Bililign Mekoya, further revealed that 3 of the suspects are under a professional suspension while the remaining three are being probed.

According to the Ethiopian athletics team doctor, Ayalew Tilhaun, some athletes have been paying as high as 900 dollar per dose to get banned substances. He said, “We know that a Turkish national named Doctor Zaka have been following athletes’ footsteps and providing them with banned substances. There is also another foreigner who is suspected of providing our athletes with doping materials and is under investigation.”

The latest revelations came after General Secretary of the Ethiopian Anti- Doping Committee, Solomon Meaza, told the Associated Press this week that there are nine athletes that are being investigated for doping. He said an additional four athletes that are wanted by the international athletics federation are being investigated by the world anti- doping agency
